Across this almost perfect sphere we call Earth, there are few places that have not already been inhabited or explored by humans. So when scientists discovered the Movile Cave, a location closed off from humanity for 5.5 million years, they knew they were bound to find something extraordinary.
The secrets of this hidden cave were discovered quite by accident when workers began investigating the area in preparation for building a power plant. But when they began work on the Constanța County land that sits close to the Black Sea and the Bulgarian border, they were completely unaware of the Romanian cave’s presence and the miracles that lay within it.
Because this hidden gem lies beneath an unspectacular sprawl of plains, it isn’t a surprise that the Movile Cave wasn’t discovered until the late 1980’s. But once it was found, scientists got to work making plans to explore it. As the cave is devoid of sunlight and contains extremely low oxygen levels, exploring it posed a dangerous challenge and required some of the most creative scientific minds to plan the trek.
